Classification, norms, standards
A comprehensive classification helps to assess the resistance of doors, windows, manholes and other building elements to burglary attempts and to ensure the protection of people and property. This classification is regulated by various norms and standards that assess the resistance of components to mechanical and manual attacks under certain conditions.
The best-known standard for the classification of burglary protection is DIN EN 1627. This specifies the requirements for the resistance of windows, doors, grille elements and similar components such as manhole covers. It defines several resistance classes that describe the ability of a component to resist a burglary attempt over a certain period of time. The higher the category, the better the burglary protection of the product.
• Resistance Class (RC) 3: Components in class RC 3 are more resistant and can withstand break-in attempts using additional tools such as a crowbar, which are carried out for at least five minutes.
• Resistance Class (RC) 4: This class offers protection against forced entry attempts with a larger set of tools, such as a cordless screwdriver or bolt cutters, for at least ten minutes.
Materials, construction and design
Burglar resistance is not only influenced by the choice of materials, but also by the construction and design of a component. For example, special reinforcements, security fittings, alarm systems and security locks are crucial to increasing resistance.
