at one's wits' end 无计可施、不知道下一步该怎么办

wit 是智慧、才智的意思，

所以 at one's wits' end 表示一个人的才智已经到了尽头，

也就是已经无计可施，不知道下一步怎么办了。

【例句】

I'm almost at my wits' end trying to deal with the problem.

我试图处理这个问题，但是几乎快要无计可施了。

catch-22 左右为难、进退两难

catch-22 这个说法来自小说《第二十二条军规 (Catch-22)》，

二战时期军方订下了第二十二条军规：如果飞行员精神上有不适任的情况，

只要亲自提出申请经军医评鉴就可以退伍，

但实际上飞行员在能 "亲自" 提出申请的情况下，

会被评定为有行为能力，故无法退伍，

因此后来 catch-22 就被引用来形容左右为难、进退两难。

【例句】

It's a Catch 22 situation. Nobody wants to support Kelvin until he is successful, but without the support, how can he ever be successful?

这是一个进退两难的难题。没有人愿意在 Kelvin 默默无名、尚未成功的时候赞助他，但没有人赞助他又怎么会有机会成功呢？

dodge a bullet 逃过一劫

dodge：躲过、逃过，dodge a bullet：躲过一颗子弹，后来引申为躲过一劫的意思。

【例句】

An important customer called our boss, so John dodged a bullet after making a mistake at the meeting.

因为重要客户来电找老板，所以 John 在会议上犯错后，逃过了一劫。

grasp at straws 抓住救命稻草，不放过任何微小的机会

straw 是稻草的意思，因此 grasp at straws 形容某人为了摆脱困境，

抓住救命稻草，不放过任何微小的机会。

【例句】

Amy knew that she was just grasping at straws, but she didn't have another choice.

Amy 知道她为了摆脱现在的困境而急病乱投医，但她没有其他选择了。

have your work cut out (for you) 面临艰巨的任务

have your work cut out (for you) 是形容人正在面临艰巨的任务，

通常是指需要在有限的时间内完成的困难事情、任务。

【例句】

You're going to have your work cut out for you.

你将会面临艰巨的任务。

last resort 最后的手段

last resort 代表的是已经尝试过所有方法，只剩下 "最后的手段" 的意思。

【例句】

We could ask our professor for help as a last resort.

作为最后手段，我们可以找教授帮忙。

the tip of the iceberg 冰山一角

iceberg：冰山，

the tip of the iceberg 想必大家都不陌生，就是冰山一角的意思，

也就是重大问题下较明显的一小部分。

【例句】

The problems that you see here now are just the tip of the iceberg.

你现在在这看到的问题不过就是冰山一角而已。

a vicious cycle 恶性循环

vicious 有邪恶的、恶毒的...等负面的意思，

而 vicious cycle 也就是常见的惯用语--恶性循环啦！

【例句】

You must be careful when dealing with the problem between you and your boyfriend, or you might get trapped in a vicious cycle.

你在处理你和你男友间的问题时一定要小心，否则一不小心可能会陷入恶性循环。

problem 是英语里面非常基础且基本的单词，

日常生活中也常常使用，

像是 "I have a big problem." （我有大麻烦了。）

"deal with / solve / tackle the problem" （解决问题）等等。

但除此之外，还有一些实用的 problem 相似、近似词，

issue 问题；议题 (n.)

issue 的意思是议题、问题，

尤其是指那种人们会去思考的问题。

以下给大家常见搭配词：

• critical issue 关键议题
• major issue 主要问题
• side issue 次要问题
• controversial issue 争议性议题
• complex issue 复杂的问题
• local issue 当地议题
• global issue 全球议题
• regional issue 区域性议题
• commercial issue 商业议题
• ethical issue 伦理问题
• environmental issue 环境议题
• health issue 健康问题
• political issue 政治议题
• social issue 社会问题
• current issue 当前的问题
• the latest issue 最新的议题

而比较常用的短语包括：

• take issue with 与⋯⋯争论
• make an issue of 为⋯⋯争论；小题大作

Abortion is a controversial issue.

setback 挫折、障碍 (n.)

setback 的意思是挫折、障碍，

经常搭配动词 experience / receive / suffer a setback（遭遇挫折）。

而形容词的搭配和 issue 的都可以共用，

• big / serious / severe setback 重大的、严重的挫折
• temporary setback 暂时性的挫折
• early setback 早期的挫败

trouble 也是一个有很多意思，并且超级常使用的单词。

介绍几个 trouble 的短语：

• take the trouble to sth 尽心尽力做某事
• be more trouble than it's worth 不值得这么麻烦
• get sb into trouble 使某人处于麻烦之中；让某人未婚怀孕

【例句】

I hope his behavior hasn't caused you any trouble.

希望他的行为没有造成你任何麻烦。

challenge 挑战、质疑 (v.) (n.)

challenge 经常使用的意思是挑战，动词和名词一样常见。

作为名词的时候，

常使用短语 take on / face the challenge 表示面对挑战；

作为动词的时候，

我们会用 challenge sb to sth 表示挑战某人某件事。

【例句】

She thinks the man is the biggest challenge of her life.

她认为这个男人是她人生最大的挑战。

difficulty 是源自于形容词 difficult（困难的），

加了 "y" 变成名词，表示不容易完成的事情。

obstacle 的障碍可以是实体的障碍，像是路障、障碍物，

也可以是没有实体的像是心理障碍、法律障碍等等。

【例句】

You know he will remove all the obstacles between you.

你知道他会排除你们之间所有阻碍。

dilemma 左右为难、两难的处境 (n.)

dilemma 特指左右为难的情境，

我们经常搭配介词 in a dillemma 表示某人左右为难，

也会使用 on the horns of a dilemma 表达进退维谷。

常见的形容词搭配像是：

• moral dilemma 道德的两难 / policy dilemma 政策困境

此外，心理学有个词汇 Prisoner's Dilemma 囚徒困境，

意思是在一个群体中，个人做出理性选择却往往导致集体的非理性。

【例句】

We will find the way out of a dilemma.

我们会找出解决困境的方法。
